Mental Health & Trauma

Anxiety

Anxiety and addiction feed each other. As part of our residential programme we treat the anxiety that drives substance use - and the anxiety that surfaces in early recovery - in a calm, structured environment.

The condition

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common conditions we see alongside addiction. For many people, alcohol, drugs or compulsive behaviour begins as a way to quiet a mind that will not settle - but over time the relief stops working and the anxiety deepens.

Harmony Retreat is an addiction treatment centre rather than a psychiatric hospital, yet we know that lasting recovery is impossible if the underlying anxiety is ignored.

Within our one-month residential programme on a working farm in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, we help patients understand their anxiety, build healthier ways to manage it, and where medication is needed we coordinate with their doctor. The calm, predictable rhythm of farm life is itself part of the treatment.

Recognising it

Signs & Symptoms

Recognising the problem is the first step towards recovery. If these feel familiar, reach out - in confidence.

  • Persistent, excessive worry that is hard to control
  • Restlessness or feeling constantly on edge
  • Racing thoughts and difficulty concentrating
  • Physical symptoms - racing heart, sweating, a tight chest
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Avoiding situations, people or places that trigger anxiety
  • Panic attacks - sudden, intense waves of fear
  • Using alcohol, drugs or other behaviours to cope
Our care

How We Help

We treat anxiety and addiction together rather than separately. Daily individual counselling helps you understand what drives your anxiety and the role substances or behaviours have played in managing it. The structured routine, physical activity and natural surroundings lower the baseline stress that fuels anxious thinking, while group work reduces the isolation anxiety thrives on. Where clinical anxiety requires medication, we coordinate with your doctor so it is managed safely alongside your recovery.

The programme

Our Treatment Approach

A structured, evidence-based path - delivered one-on-one and in group, within our one-month residential programme.

1

Untangling the Worry

One-on-one sessions with your assigned counsellor to trace where the anxious thoughts start and recognise the patterns of avoidance and catastrophising that keep the worry cycle spinning.

2

A Predictable Daily Rhythm

Anxiety thrives on uncertainty, so a calm, predictable rhythm of meals, sessions and rest gives the nervous system fewer unknowns to brace against and lets it settle.

3

Discharging Nervous Tension

Gym, pool and daily walks through the farm give the body a physical outlet for the restlessness and pent-up adrenaline that anxiety leaves in the muscles and chest.

4

Naming It Out Loud

Sharing openly in a group of people who live with the same racing thoughts breaks the private, shameful isolation that convinces you your anxiety is yours alone to carry.

5

Calming the Body in the Moment

Practical breathing and grounding techniques you can use the instant panic rises, so you can steady a spike of anxiety without reaching for a substance to numb it.

6

Safe Medication Liaison

Where anti-anxiety or antidepressant medication is part of your treatment, we liaise with your doctor to manage it safely and watch for any interaction during your stay.
