Depression

Depression and addiction often go hand in hand. We treat the low mood, hopelessness and exhaustion that so often sit beneath substance use - as part of compassionate, structured residential care.

The condition

Understanding Depression

Depression and addiction are deeply linked. Some people drink or use to escape a persistent low mood; for others the consequences of addiction - broken relationships, lost work, shame - bring on depression. Either way, treating one without the other rarely works.

Harmony Retreat is an addiction treatment centre rather than a psychiatric facility, but our team has spent more than 30 years working with people whose addiction is entangled with depression.

Within our one-month residential programme we provide the structure, connection, purpose and counselling that lift people out of isolation, and where antidepressant medication is needed we coordinate with their doctor. Recovery and renewed hope are built together.

Our care

How We Help

Our programme lifts depression through structure, connection and purpose alongside addiction treatment. Individual counselling addresses the low mood and the thinking patterns that sustain it, while occupational therapy and a daily routine restore a sense of capability. Movement, nature and good nutrition support the body, and group sessions rebuild the human connection depression erodes. Where antidepressant medication is appropriate, we coordinate with your doctor.

The programme

Our Treatment Approach

A structured, evidence-based path - delivered one-on-one and in group, within our one-month residential programme.

1

Naming The Low

Daily counselling that traces where your low mood took hold and how it became tangled with substance use, so the two can be treated together rather than one masking the other.

2

A Reason To Rise

Occupational therapy and a structured farm day rebuild small wins, momentum and a genuine reason to get up when depression makes staying in bed feel easier.

3

Feeding The Brain

Exercise, morning walks through the midlands and dietitian-planned meals restore the sleep, appetite and body chemistry that low mood erodes.

4

Breaking The Isolation

Shared group work rebuilds the human connection depression quietly strips away, countering the withdrawal and self-blame that keep the low in place.

5

Catching The Slide

Recognising the early low points, hopeless thoughts and withdrawal that lead back to substances, and rehearsing healthier responses before the slide takes hold.

6

Antidepressant Support

Where antidepressant medication forms part of your care, we liaise with your doctor so it works alongside the therapeutic programme rather than in isolation.
