Behavioural Addiction

Gambling

Break the cycle of compulsive gambling with specialised behavioural addiction treatment in a supportive residential setting.

The condition

Understanding Gambling

Gambling addiction, also known as compulsive gambling or gambling disorder, is a behavioural addiction that can be just as devastating as any substance dependency. The rush of placing a bet activates the same reward pathways in the brain as drugs or alcohol, creating a cycle of chasing losses, lying to loved ones, and financial destruction. Many people with gambling problems also struggle with anxiety, depression, or other addictions.

At Harmony Retreat, we treat gambling addiction with the same rigour and compassion as substance dependency, recognising that the underlying patterns of compulsive behaviour require professional intervention.

Our care

How We Help

Our residential setting removes you from access to gambling entirely - no phones, no apps, no casinos - allowing the compulsive cycle to break. With daily individual counselling, group therapy, and structured activities, we help you understand the emotional drivers behind your gambling and develop healthier ways to meet those needs. The farm environment provides natural stimulation and routine that replaces the artificial highs of gambling with genuine fulfilment.

The programme

Our Treatment Approach

A structured, evidence-based path - delivered one-on-one and in group, within our one-month residential programme.

1

Rewiring the Gambler's Fallacy

Identifying and challenging the distorted thinking that keeps you betting - the belief in lucky streaks and near-misses, the illusion that skill controls the outcome, and the compulsion to chase losses with one more wager.

2

Uncovering the Chase

Daily one-on-one sessions with your assigned counsellor to explore the emotional triggers behind the chase, the highs and lows the gambling has been regulating, and the unmet needs it has been filling.

3

Financial Impact Workshop

Honest assessment of the financial damage and practical planning for recovery, including facing hidden debts, rebuilding a realistic budget, and putting safeguards in place so money is no longer within easy reach of the urge.

4

Gamblers Anonymous Framework

Modified 12-step work tailored for behavioural addiction, building the accountability, honesty about the extent of the losses, and recovery structure that will hold you steady long after you leave the farm.

5

Riding Out the Urge

Learning healthy coping strategies for the restlessness, boredom, and emotional pain that spark the urge to bet, and practising how to sit with a craving until it passes rather than acting on it.

6

Rebuilding Broken Trust

Addressing the trust shattered by secrecy, hidden accounts, and financial betrayal, with family sessions available to begin honest conversations about the harm done and the path to rebuilding confidence.
