Trauma
Unresolved trauma sits beneath much addiction. In a safe, confidential setting we help patients begin to address the past that drives the present - at a pace that protects their recovery.
Understanding Trauma
For many people addiction is rooted in trauma - childhood abuse or neglect, violence, loss, accidents, or the cumulative weight of difficult experiences. Substances and compulsive behaviours become a way to survive memories and feelings that feel unbearable.
Harmony Retreat is an addiction treatment centre, and our trauma work is focused on recovery: helping patients understand the link between what happened to them and how they cope, in a safe environment, without re-traumatising them. Deeper, specialised trauma therapy is something we help patients continue after treatment.
Within our programme, safety, trust, routine and counselling create the stable ground from which healing can begin.

How We Help
We address trauma carefully and at a safe pace. The first priority is stability - a calm environment, a steady routine and a trusting relationship with your counsellor. From there, individual counselling helps you understand how past experiences shape present coping, without forcing you to relive them before you are ready. Group support reduces the shame and isolation trauma creates, and we help you build a plan for continued, specialised trauma therapy after your stay.
Our Treatment Approach
A structured, evidence-based path - delivered one-on-one and in group, within our one-month residential programme.
Safety Before Story
A calm farm setting and predictable daily routine come first, because a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight cannot begin healing until it recognises it is finally safe.
Working At A Safe Pace
We never force you to relive the worst of it. Your counsellor helps you understand how past events still drive present coping, moving only as fast as your recovery can hold.
Relearning To Trust
Trauma teaches you that people and safety cannot be relied on. A consistent, non-judgmental counsellor relationship, held steadily over the programme, slowly repairs that damage.
Breaking The Silence
Hearing others name the same shame, self-blame and isolation loosens the secrecy trauma feeds on, and shows you that what happened was never your fault.
Grounding Through Flashbacks
Practical tools to bring you back to the present when flashbacks, hypervigilance or overwhelm hit, so you can steady yourself without reaching for substances.
Onward Trauma Care
One month begins the work but rarely finishes it. We leave you with a clear plan and referral for continued specialised trauma therapy close to home.
