Substance Addiction

Drug Addiction

Evidence-based treatment for substance dependency in a safe, residential environment on a working farm in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. We treat all major drug addictions prevalent in South Africa.

The condition

Understanding Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a chronic condition characterised by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences. It changes the brain in fundamental ways, disturbing normal functioning and creating powerful cravings.

At Harmony Retreat, we understand that addiction is not a moral failing - it is a medical condition that responds to proper treatment.

Over 30 years in KwaZulu-Natal, we have treated every substance common to South Africa, from nyaope and tik to heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs. Our one-month residential program addresses the physical, psychological, and emotional dimensions of substance dependency, giving patients the tools they need to build a lasting recovery.

Recognising it

Signs & Symptoms

Recognising the problem is the first step towards recovery. If these feel familiar, reach out - in confidence.

  • Increasing tolerance - needing more of the substance to achieve the same effect
  • Withdrawal symptoms when not using
  • Loss of control over how much or how often you use
  • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home
  • Continued use despite relationship, financial, or health problems
  • Spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering from the substance
  • Giving up activities you once enjoyed
  • Using in dangerous situations

How We Help

Our approach to drug addiction combines client-centred therapy (Carl Rogers model) with 12-step principles. Each patient receives an assigned counsellor who develops a personalised treatment plan tailored to their specific substance and circumstances. We address not just the substance use, but the underlying pain, trauma, and behavioural patterns that drive addiction. Our intimate setting of just 12 patients ensures you are never just a number - you are part of a family working towards recovery together. Below are the specific substances we treat and how we approach each one.

The programme

Our Treatment Approach

A structured, evidence-based path - delivered one-on-one and in group, within our one-month residential programme.

1

Safe Off-Site Detox First

For opioids and benzodiazepines especially, we arrange supervised off-site medical detox before admission so your body is physically stable and the dangerous withdrawal window is behind you before therapeutic work begins.

2

Uncovering What You Were Numbing

Daily one-on-one counselling to trace the pain, trauma, or void the drug was medicating, so recovery treats the driver of use rather than only the substance itself.

3

Recovery Alongside Others Who Understand

Facilitated sessions with people recovering from different substances, where shared honesty about cravings, shame, and relapse builds the accountability and solidarity that isolation in active addiction destroyed.

4

Working The Twelve Steps

Structured, experienced guidance through the twelve steps, building a durable framework of surrender, honest inventory, and daily practice that holds regardless of which drug brought you here.

5

Rebuilding A Life Beyond The Fix

Practical daily activities that restore routine, responsibility, and self-worth for lives that drug-seeking had narrowed down to the next fix, re-teaching the living skills active addiction stripped away.

6

Mapping Your Triggers And Circles

We identify your personal cues, cravings, and high-risk moments, then build a concrete plan for the specific dealers, environments, and social circles tied to your drug so you can leave and stay clean.
